Diplomats and other foreign government officials traveling to the Liberia to engage solely in official duties or activities on behalf of their national government must obtain visas prior to entering Liberia. They cannot travel using visitor visas, except for those countries that are listed under Liberia Visa Waver Program and with the exception of a Head of State or Government — who qualifies for a visa regardless of the purpose of travel — your position within your country’s government and your purpose of travel determine whether you need a visa and the duration of the visa. Immediate family members of diplomats and government officials receive Diplomatic visas, with few exceptions. Personal employees, attendants, or domestic workers for diplomats and government officials (holding a valid visa) may be issued visas.

To qualify for a visa, you must be traveling to the Republic of Liberia on behalf of your national government to engage solely in official activities for that government. The specific duties or services that will be performed must be governmental in character or nature, as determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in accordance with Liberia immigration laws. Government officials traveling to the Republic of Liberia to perform non-governmental functions of a commercial nature, or traveling as tourists, require the appropriate visas and do not qualify for Diplomatic visas. The fact that there may be government interest or control in a given organization is not in itself the defining factor in determining if you qualify for a Diplomatic visa.

HOW TO APPLY

There are several steps to apply for a visa. The order of these steps and how you complete them may vary at the Liberian Embassy or Consulate where you apply. Please consult the instructions available on the embassy website where you will apply for your visas.

About Visa Interviews

As part of the visa application process, an interview at the Liberian Embassy is required for most visa applicants applying abroad. Embassies and consulates generally do not require interviews for those applying for Diplomatic visas, although a consular officer can request an interview.

Personal employees, domestic workers, and attendants of Diplomatic visa holders applying for Official visas are required to be interviewed.

  • Visa Application, Form.
  • You must: 1) download and complete the visa application form and 2) You must submit the page / pages as part of your application.
  • Photo–You will attach your photo when completing the application form.   Your photo must have been taken within the past six months and must be the format explained in the Photograph Requirements.
Photograph Requirements.

Your photos or digital images must be:

  • In color
  • Sized such that the head is between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (22 mm and 35 mm) or 50% and 69% of the image’s total height from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
  • Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance
  • Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background
  • Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
  • With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open
  • Taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis
  • Uniforms should not be worn in your photo, except religious clothing that is worn daily.
  • Do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline unless worn daily for a religious purpose. Your full face must be visible, and the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face.

Headphones, wireless hands-free devices, or similar items are not acceptable in your photo.

Submit Required Documentation

All applicants for Diplomatic visas should deliver the following required documents to the Liberian Embassy or Consulate in your home country:

  • Passport valid for travel to the Republic of Liberia – Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months prior to or beyond your travel or stay in Liberia (unless exempt by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). If more than one person is included in your passport, each person who needs a visa must submit a separate application.
  • Photo– You should attach your photo while completing the visa Form.
  • A diplomatic note- This note is written confirmation from your country’s government of your status and official purpose of travel. Local staff members applying for a diplomatic visa also require diplomatic notes to confirm the official status of their employers.
  • The sending government should provide the following information in the diplomatic note submitted for Diplomatic visa application outside Liberia,

the government official’s or employee’s name, date of birth, position and title, place of assignment or visit, the purpose of travel, travel date, and the anticipated length of stay in Liberia.
